Where do I park when I go to the Reno Office?

A.

Park in the parking area off of Plumb Lane. If you park in the parking lot off of Terminal, you can get a ticket from Airport Security.

How do I check on the status of my application?

A.

In order to check the status of your Application, you can email us at nvmassagebd@state.nv.us or fax us at (775) 786-4264. Include a return fax number or we will mail your status check by way of U.S. Postal Service. Allow a minimum of 24 to 48 hours for a response. Status checks will not be given over the phone.

Note: We will not have any status to give until a minimum of 5 weeks after you have completed the Live Scan fingerprinting process.

I have my Nevada State Board of Massage Therapist License. Do I need any other licenses to do massage in Nevada?

A.

Contact your local jurisdiction where you do business to find out the requirements for Business Licensing.

Who does not have to be licensed under the Nevada State Massage Therapy Law?

A.

NRS640C.100 lists those who are exempt from obtaining a license. Please refer to this section for a list of those who are not required to have a Nevada State Massage Therapy License. http://www.leg.state.nv.us/NRS/NRS-640C.html#NRS640CSec050

Why must I obtain a Nevada State Board of Massage Therapists license?

A.

NRS640C.400 requires you to have a license. The license will be valid throughout the State of Nevada and you will not have to go through multiple background investigations when you obtain your license. The public concerns regarding health, safety and welfare will be met by the licensing and regulating of Massage Therapists and you will be perceived as a professional. You will be regulated by your peers.

I missed the Grandfathering Period, how do I get my State license?

A.

You will have to apply as a new applicant. Download the application for “Application Request Form” under the FORMS tab. Complete all required information and return to our office for processing.

Why can I not still grandfather in?

A.

Under AB250 Sec. 56 which created the Massage Board, states that the grandfathering period will end after June 30, 2007. This is not reversible by the Massage Board.

How do I obtain an application?

A.

Click the FORMS tab above, and then select the Application Request Form. Follow the instructions and return to our office. You will receive an Application with the appropriate instructions.

How long will it take for me to have my license in hand after I apply?

A.

The background check varies. Live Scan takes 5 to 7 weeks. Submitting fingerprint cards take 4 to 5 months. Dependent on Criminal History obtained.

How many hours of schooling do I need to become licensed in the State of Nevada?

A.

You will have to complete a course in Massage Therapy of at least 500 hours.

I received my schooling in another Country. What do I need to do to submit my transcripts translated to English?

You will need to have your transcripts translated into English from an interrupter in Nevada.

I want to take an online Massage Program for my core curriculum. Will this qualify me for licensure?

  1.  

No, the Commission on Post Secondary Education does not recognize any distance learning of any type for a Massage Therapy Program. Therefore, the Nevada State Board of Massage Therapists does not recognize any distance education for a core curriculum Massage Program.

Does Nevada have a Multiple Tiered Licensing?

A.

No. Nevada offers one level of licensing.

 

 

  1. Q.

My School is on your “Schools Not Approved in Nevada” list. What do I need to do in order to apply?

A.

If you went to school prior to the date on the list you will need to provide our office with the following information from the time frame you attended Massage School:

            School Attendance Record                    Bank Statements

            Tuition Receipts                                                Utility Bills

            Notes taken during class                        Massage Exams

            Credit Card Statements                          Rental Agreements

All documentation must have the applicant’s name on the documents. All copies must be one sided. DO NOT SEND NOTEBOOKS. All information will be destroyed after review.

 

If you attended school after the date listed your Application will not be accepted by the Nevada State Board of Massage Therapists.

My education was obtained in California. It is not on your list of “Schools not Approved in Nevada” does my Application need to go before the Board for an Application Review?

A.

Yes. All education that was received in California must have an Application Review. Once the Application is complete it will be scheduled for the next available Board Meeting.

What test do I need to take in order to get a license?

A.

We require that you take and pass a National Exam. The National Certification Exam of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCETMB), The National Certification Exam of Therapeutic Massage (NCETM), National Exam for State Licensure (NESL) or the MBLEx. In order to take an Exam offered by the National Board, you will need to contact the National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) or In order to take the MBLEx please contact the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards. We have a link to the NCBTMB’s website on our main page.

When applying for my license how do I submit my transcripts?

A.

You will need to contact your school and have them send your transcripts directly to our office, or you may bring your transcripts to our office in the original sealed envelope from the school. Transcripts must be received before your Application.

 

 

  1. Q.

What if I cannot obtain my original transcripts or my school is no longer in business?

A.

You will need to contact the Commission on Postsecondary Education in the state which you went to school. They should have your transcripts on file. If after checking with the Commission on Postsecondary Education and they do not have your transcripts then contact our office in writing by email nvmassagebd@state.nv.us or fax (775) 786-4264 to let us know. Your application will need to be scheduled for a Board Meeting for an Application Review.

How do I verify if my school is accredited?

A.

You will need to contact the Post Secondary Education in the state which you went to school in.

I mailed in the Temporary Application for a “TEMP” license, when will I receive it?

A.

A Temporary License is sent out 45 days from the date your completed Temporary Application is received in our office. If you send in the Temporary Application after your original Application, the 45 day countdown will start when we receive your Temporary Application and not from the date we received your original Application.

 

 

  1. Q.

I am transferring my license from another state. Do I need to send in fingerprint cards if I am getting my Licensing Authority (State or Local) to sign-off on the Certified Statement from State Licensing Authority?

A.

No, you do not need to submit fingerprint cards or the $125.00 FBI/State fingerprinting fee. Note: If criminal history applies you will need to submit fingerprints for a background check.

 

 

  1. Q.

My school said that I can practice massage therapy under another person’s license.  Is this true?

A.

No.  Under NRS 640C.910 you must acquire a license to practice Massage Therapy in the State of Nevada.

 

 

27.  Q.

My school gave me homework to perform massage on the general public outside of school.  Is this okay?

A.

No.  Unless it is a school sponsored function, it is a misdemeanor to practice Massage Therapy in the State of Nevada without a current license.

 

 

28.  Q.

My school gave me business cards and it has L.M.T. on it.  Is this okay to pass out to the public?

A.

No, under NRS 640C.910, if a person is not licensed to practice Massage Therapy in the State of Nevada, you may not use L.M.T. or any symbol or letters indicating you are a Licensed Massage Therapist. Your Massage License Number must be included in all advertising.

 

 

29.  Q.

What if my state will not sign the Certified Statement from State Licensing Authority Form?

A.

You will need to submit two fingerprint cards with a cashier check or money order with appropriate fees. Please review NRS 640C.420 for transferring requirements. Note: If you are transferring from Indiana please contact our office at either location and we will direct you on how to get your signoff.

 

 

30. Q.

Where do I get my fingerprinting done?

A.

For fingerprint cards there is a list of places on pages 11 and 12 in your Application Packet. Live Scan option has locations listed on the voucher that you will receive after you send in your Application.

How long does it take to process the fingerprints?

A.

Please refer to questions # 13

What is ‘Administratively Complete’?

A.

An Application must be ‘Administratively Complete’ before the Board Office will review and rule on the Application. In order to be considered ‘Administratively Complete’ the Board must have received a Completed Application Form, a fingerprint report from the Department of Public Safety and the FBI (if applicable), and all required supporting documentation and fees. The Board will then process the Application.

How long does it take to process my Renewal?

A.

The processing of all renewals takes 10 to 15 business days. Renewals are processed in the order they are received.

Can I pick my license up in the office?

A.

Unfortunately, no.

Can you overnight my license to me?

A.

Unfortunately, no.

How many Continuing Education Hours (C.E.H.) do I need to renew my license?

A.

You will need 12 C.E.H. to renew your license. We will roll over up to 36 C.E.H. over a 3 year period. For example, if you acquired 48 C.E.H. after you first received your State License, 12 C.E.H. will be applied to this year’s renewal and 36 C.E.H. carried over the next 3 years.

I took some classes two years ago; may I apply these C.E.H.’s to my renewal?

A.

No, the only Continuing Education Hours (C.E.H.) that will be accepted is those that you acquired after receiving your Nevada State License or within the 14 months preceding the Renewal of your license.

 

 

  1.  Q.

I attended a Nevada State Board of Massage Therapy Board Meeting.  Can I receive Continuing Education Hours for attending?

A.

Yes. Please complete the Credit for Attending a Program Form located under the Forms tab on the website and submit with your Renewal and appropriate fees. The Sign in sheet must be verified and you will be given 1 hour of credit for every Board Meeting with a maximum of 8 hours per year.

What classes can I take to fulfill my C.E.H. requirements?

A.

Please refer to the Renewal Instructions link under the Bulletins section.

 

 

  1. Q.

Do I have to submit the original copy of my C.E.H. Certificate?

A.

Yes, we prefer the original. If you don’t want to send the original you must send a certified/notarized copy.

 

 

  1. Q.

What does certified / notarized copy mean?

A.

You must take your originals to a notary and have the original copy notarized.

 

 

  1. Q.

How many Ethic Hours do I need for my renewal?

A.

Currently, we do not have category requirements to fulfill. Read Continuing Education Hours Instruction on the Renewal Instruction form.

 

 

  1. Q.

I do not have the required CEH’s for my renewal. What can I do?

A.

We do not recommend or endorse any providers, but you can locate some National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork approved courses at the following websites. www.ncbtmb.com, www.massagetherapy.org, www.abmp.com, www.onlinece.com  www.elitecme.com or www.apollo123.com.

When do I need to download a Continuing Education Form?

A.

If you obtained C.E.H.s that are not certified by the NCBTMB, approved by the Commission on Postsecondary Education, or taken at an Institution of Higher Learning and/or within the University system. You will find the CEH Forms under the FORMS tab.

 

 

  1. Q.

May I put the letters L.M.T. (Licensed Massage Therapist) or M.T. (Massage Therapist) after my name?

A.

Under NRS 640C.910 - Only if you are a Nevada State Licensed Massage Therapist.

What is the proper term to use in order to describe my profession and the business I work in?

A.

If you are Nevada State Licensed, PLEASE refer to yourself as a Massage Therapist, and to your business as a Massage Establishment.

How do I file a complaint?

A.

Please download the Complaint Form under the FORMS tab above. In order to take action, we will need this form to be completed thoroughly.

I lost my license, how do I get another one?

A.

Download the Duplicate License Affidavit under the FORMS tab. Please read instructions, complete the form and send to our office with the appropriate fee.

I got married (divorced) and want my name changed on my license, what do I do?

A.

Download the Duplicate License Affidavit under the FORMS tab. Please read instructions, complete the form and send to our office with the appropriate fee.

I moved and want my address changed on my license, what do I do?

A.

Download the Duplicate License Affidavit under the FORMS tab. Please read instructions, complete the form and send to our office with the appropriate fee.

I moved but I don’t want to change the address on my license. What do I need to do?

A.

You will need to update your address in our records. Send your new mailing address to our office via email, fax or U.S. Mail. A change of address form can be found on the FORMS tab.

Can I submit my CEH’s from last year for this year?

A.

NO.  All credits in excess must be submitted at the time of the Renewal in the year in which the CEH’s were taken. (eg. Renewal period March 1, 2008-  February 28, 2009.  All CEH’s taken between March 1, 2007 – February 28, 2008 must be submitted at that time to be counted for rollover).  You have until your expiration date to submit CEH’s to be used for rollover.

 

 

53.  Q.

I want to take some time off from practicing massage, what should I do?

A.

Your license must be current when you email, fax or mail a letter stating that you wish to have your license put on Inactive Status.  At that point, you have 5 years to bring your license current.  The fee is $100.00 plus the Renewal fee which is currently $150.00.  If you Reactivate within 1 to 24 months, you must submit the Renewal Form and 12 hours of Continuing Education Hours must be submitted within 6 months of Renewal Form.

If you Reactivate within 25 to 60 months, you must submit with the Renewal 2 fingerprint cards and 12 hours of Continuing Education Hours.

The fees associated to Reactivate a license:

 

            1 to 24 months – Renewal Application - $100.00*

            License Fee $150.00*

            Total - $250.00

 

            25 to 60 months – Renewal Application – 100.00*

            License Fee $150.00*

            Fingerprint Cards $125.00*

            Total - $375.00

 If you fail to Reactivate after 5 years, you must apply as a New Applicant.

 

 

54.  Q.

My license is expired.  What do I need to do?

A.

You must submit your Renewal Form with 12 CEH for each year you are expired with the current Renewal Fee for each year your license is expired and $25.00 per month in late fees. The late fees may not exceed $500.00.

 

 

55.  Q.

I am transferring my license from another state to Nevada.  Do I still have to take the National Exam?

A.

Yes, you will need to have taken and passed one of the exams given from NCBTMB or the MBLEx.

 

 

56. Q.

I want to transfer my license to another state. What forms to I need to complete?

A.

You will need to complete a Verification of Licensure. This can be found under the FORMS tab. Check with the state you will be transferring to. They will have a procedure you will need to complete too.

 

 

57.  Q. 

I have taken the MBLEx Exam.  What do I need to do to get licensed in Nevada?

A.

You will need to submit your completed Application. The Nevada State Board of Massage Therapists has approved the MBLEx Exam as an Exam for Licensure in Nevada.

58.  Q.

I want to do massages from my home.  Is this legal?

A.

You will need to check with your local jurisdiction where you are practicing. They may have Business Licensing laws that prohibit this from occurring.

 

 

59.  Q.

Is cross gender massage legal in Nevada?

A.

Cross gender massage is legal in the State of Nevada.

o                                     Clark County changed their code March of 2009

o                                                  City of Las Vegas changed their code September of 2008

 

60.  Q.

I work for a Chiropractor.  Do I still need a Massage Therapists’ License or can I practice under the Chiropractor?

A.

Yes, you need a Nevada State Massage Therapists license. You cannot practice under anyone’s license.

 

 

61.  Q.

I am trying to print a renewal form from your website.  Where is it?

A.

Renewal forms are not available online.  Renewal forms are mailed out approximately 90 days prior to the expiration of your license.  Please contact our office if you wish to receive a Renewal form.

62.  Q

Can I take my photo myself and make it 2X2?

A.

Yes. You can but please make sure that it is a white background showing head and shoulders and printed on photo paper.  See the link for more clarification.
